A sound walk is a walk with the focus of listening to the environment. We were split into pairs and given a pole which was held at one end by the blindfolded partner and the other by the non-blindfolded partner who led the former. I found this exercise really beneficial to me as I’m from a musically trained background so used to focusing on sound made to listen to. I usually don’t pay much attention to environmental sounds when walking so I found it stimulating to focus on the different individual sounds and how they blended together to create this composition that is forever changing. It’s incredible to think that everyone is hearing a completely different and varied composition every day without necessarily focusing or caring about it. I also found the sound walk a primal experience. Walking around without vision, the sense we are most dependent on, created almost a fight or flight response as I felt vulnerable. My other senses began to heighten in response and while on my way home from the sound walk I found my ears almost overpowering my eyes in terms of holding my brain’s attention.
