It was interesting listening to Yassmin talk about music and social etiquette. Audience reaction is heavily important to communicate enjoyment or dislike to the performer, as well as to affirm they should keep up what they are doing. In different genres this is communicated in different ways depending on the rigidity of the music. For instance, dance music is a lot more instinctive allowing the crowd to let themselves go and move however they see fit. There is a symbiotic like relationship between the DJ and crowd allowing both to react and feed off of each other. On the other end of the spectrum is classical music where everything is rehearsed, controlled and fine tuned. Listeners are expected to be still and quiet, showing there support for the performers after they have stopped playing. In this setting there is barely any interaction between the two groups.

Yassmin goes on to talk about how the boundaries on how to react during live music are never crossed. Leading me to think about how restrictive ‘conventional’ music is. Music is about genres. Finding a way to fit within the parameters of a genre without pushing the boat out too far where it becomes reclassified into something different. Overall I think it’s very questionable whether we should consider music art.
