Skip to 32:18 for the start of the improvised modular section
This is the first and only time(so far) that I have used my modular case in a solo live setting. This was broadcasted on the Noods radio website and also the first time I had done anything on the radio. I have done 10-20 gigs with the same modular case but patched with making ambient drones in mind for the band I play in(Damefrisor) but this is the first time I had specifically patched it to be its own band.
There were many unforeseen variables that popped up before during and after the performance. The first problem I ran into was setting up. My friend Nyle and I agreed to split our hour slot in half, he would be playing some ambient tunes first. During the time he was doing his set I was setting up my modular equipment, there was no space in the booth apart from on the decks so I had to set up my equipment, leave it on the floor then when he was done, quickly move all the equipment onto the decks and start playing. We also had to soundcheck and mix the sounds while live hence the alarmingly loud entrance of the kick and weird levels of some of the sounds. I also found it hard to tell what the levels were like of each element I would bring in and out in comparison with each other because I was listening to it through monitors. If I had headphones I would’ve been able to be more precise with the levels. Other problems arose during the set, such as me accidentally patching the left channel of a stereo out to the first channel of a sub mixer and the left of a different stereo out to the same channel. I fixed this near the start of this performance and can be heard as the crackles around 38 minutes in. Luckily it doesn’t sound too out of place due to the sounds I decided to work with.
Overall I found it a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Noods radio is located in a cafe and I had people in the cafe after the half an hour set telling me they were dancing and having a good time to the sounds I made. A nice bonus. I knew going into performing that this would be by no means easy considering my experience playing live on radio, as well as the amount of time I had been learning and experimenting with modular synthesis which I am still relatively new to (Nearly a year now).
