Robloxcore is a subgenre of hyper-pop spawned from the players who play Roblox. Roblox is a game creation engine that allows players to create minigames on multiplayer servers. Roblox’s most popular mnigames are based around roleplay meaning players play and take on a different persona whether that’s a police officer, a doctor or a mother of five kids. In late 2013 the boombox was added into the game. An item where players could now upload and share their own mp3s while exploring the world they are in. The boombox acts like a beacon emanating sound 360 degrees around the owner increasing in amplitude the closer players get to each other.

Although all sounds uploaded were censored due to the young demographic that played the game, players managed to get around this by distorting the audio of the tracks so the lyrics and profanity became disguised. This is called ‘bypassing tracks’. Spawning a new super distorted amalgamation of cloud rap and hyper-pop. The nature of the boombox meant players would split into different groups depending on the tracks they had equipped to their boombox so in turn it acted like a cultural signifier and an emblem of the individual player’s interests in the Roblox ecosystem.
