The rough soundtrack idea for a short film after the first recording session. There will be 3 short stories with each requiring different sounds. This is the first of 3. I recorded worked together with the director of the short film to find sounds, using modular synthesis, we felt could illicit the right atmosphere while viewers read the scroll which pops up on screen. The writer wanted something more intense which I felt might not be the right atmosphere due to the length of time the scroll will be on screen. The intensity will drain away the further into the video the viewers reach, as they concentrate on reading the scroll. We met halfway and recorded sounds that become intense when the scroll pops up on screen. Collaborating can be challenging when working with creatives of different disciplines because they may not have the sonic vocabulary to express their ideas in a cohesive way. Leaving my job to interpret what they want and recreate this and pose ideas I feel might work better in terms of the sound. I’m thinking of adding a wind recording in the background as that can give off quite an intense and suspenseful atmosphere without sounding like it’s forcing unneeded intensity onto the viewer.
