Plot Armour is a collaboration between me and Jin. Our practice involves improvising with synthesisers with each other in a sonic symbiotic relationship. We switch roles and frequency ranges, taking turns to rule the bass or treble domain and so forth. I work with a modular synthesiser that I patch differently every gig while Jin works with an analog four and Ableton. This is my first live improvisational project in collaboration with someone else and I learnt the importance of being aware of your collaborator when performing. For this project we decided to approach the improvisation like in jazz, not aiming to ever be at the forefront or the driving force but rather aiming to accompany and supplement each other’s sounds. This was a new way of working for me as I perform live with a band where we play songs we have written already, therefore sonic decisions take place before performing so this highlighted how important it was to communicate which frequency bands we wanted to switch to and the intensity of the sounds we wanted to produce.
