Lucia H Chung is a Taiwanese artist based in London, UK. She holds a Master degree in Sculpture from Winchester School of Art and a PhD degree in Sonic Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London. She performs and releases music under the alias ‘en creux’ where the sound creation springs from her fascinations in noise generated via feedback on digital and analogue equipment, and her role as a ‘mediator-performer’ in the multifaceted relationship between the sonic events incurring within the self-regulated system.

Chung created a piece analysing how she talks and acts when she is speaking English as opposed to her native language of Mandarin. She noticed that when she’s talking English her expressions and mannerisms change, becoming more muted, as opposed to her more animated outward projections when talking in Mandarin. This could be because English is a second language so she can’t express herself fully because she might be having to think harder to find the words to describe what she is talking about. There may be other factors that could influence this, maybe she feels more comfortable and confident speaking Mandarin so she comes across louder and more animated. This is an interesting line of thought. How someone’s personality might differ when talking different languages. My friend Travis is originally from Hong Kong and speaks Cantonese. I noticed when I went round to his house that when he talked in his native language with his roommate he included different mannerisms and movements when talking. This could be something I would want to find out more about as someone who speaks 1 language. It would be interesting how my personality might differ speaking a different language.
