This was my first time recording in mid side. With my plan of mixing two opposite soundscapes together and already having taken recordings in the countryside I decided to borrow a Sanken CMS-50 stereo shotgun mic and the Mixpre field recorder from uni. At first I decided on setting up in Elephant Park to capture the building works taking place by Sayer Street. There wasn’t much building work going on at this time which is strange for a weekday. I moved to the entrance of Elephant and Castle train station where there was more urban activity producing sound. Listening back to the recordings the first thing I noticed was the range of different sounds heard throughout the recording compared to the countryside recordings I’d taken. Not only in amplitude, but in frequency and timbre as well. Probably boiling down to a wider range of life that is not conscious about the sounds they make. In the countryside there are more animals but it is often in their interest to be quieter as making too much sound could lead to them being preyed upon. Of course birds buck this trend by dominating the higher frequency ranges with their bird calls and is therefore dominates the recordings I made at the farm. In the Elephant and castle recordings however there are short and sharp hits, there are low rumbles, the midrange chatter of people talking and so on. I’m hoping the sounds of the countryside are subtle yet obvious when placed intermittently through the city recordings.
