Listening to Jessica Ekomane talk about her installation piece “Comedown” hit home for me the impact of the cultural, locational and atmospheric importance of the venue on installation pieces. Comedown is currently installed in Berghain, playing on this knowledge Ekomane made (in her own words) deconstructed dance music with endless build ups lacking a drop or release of tension akin to a spoiled orgasm. I started thinking if this piece was installed in, for instance the Royal Albert Hall would the piece have the same emotional effect on the listener as it does in Berghain? Berghain is synonymous with techno and because of that the whole experience too and from the club will be tied to techno. Getting off the U-Bahn at Ostbahnhof, The walk towards the building and seeing the ominous stalinist architecture in the distance, the dimmed lights when entering the club etc. all contribute to the expectations of the listener as well as intensifying the emotional effect.
